- Gears of War: E-Day has peaked at about 31K concurrent Steam players at launch.
- The launch comes after strong critical reception and high expectations for the latest entry.
- These figures suggest the third-person shooter hasn’t sold too well despite the high expectations.
After years of excitement and anticipation, Gears of War: E-Day launched to around 20K Steam players in early access.
Many expected the game’s situation to improve during its full release, especially since the title became Steam’s best-seller leading up to its release. However, as of today, the title has managed to hit just over 30K concurrent Steam players.
Why it matters: Following Halo Campaign Evolved’s disappointing commercial performance, Xbox likely hoped to see the Gears of War series return to form with its latest entry.

Gears of War: E-Day was expected to be one of Xbox’s biggest launches, but its early Steam numbers suggest the PC audience may not have shown up at the scale many expected.
SteamDB shows that the title has managed to hit 31,517 concurrent players on the platform following its full release. Of course, this is far from terrible, but Xbox’s flagship franchise hasn’t performed as well as many expected.
Note that Gears of War: E-Day is still the best-performing game in the series on the platform. In fact, even the recently released Gears of War: Reloaded didn’t perform too well on the platform.
However, the recent numbers are still disappointing since E-Day has been a long time coming, and the title likely cost Xbox millions of dollars.
Given the title likely saw its sales being cannibalized by Game Pass on Xbox, the Steam figures suggest Gears of War: E-Day might not have sold too well. This is concerning since The Coalition developers already expressed concerns regarding layoffs ahead of the title’s release.
