Gears Of War Devs Used The Xbox Series S SSD As Makeshift Ram To Run The Game

The Developers Are Already Being Asked About This Loophole.

Story Highlight
  • Gears of War: E-Day developers used the SSD memory as Makeshift RAM to achieve better results.
  • The team achieved 60 FPS without lowering the quality of the title.
  • Other studios have already asked The Coalition for details about this technique.

Gears of War: E-Day has had a fantastic start to life on the critical front, getting praised worldwide by critics and fans alike for being a fantastic return to form for the IP. In early access alone, the game doubled the all-time player peak of the franchise on Steam, debuting with over 20k players.

The visuals of Gears of War: E-Day have also received acclaim from the gaming world, with the title’s performance on Xbox Series S getting singled out by analysts. Now, the development team has revealed why the game runs so well on the console.

Why it matters: Issues with the Xbox Series S have plagued the console throughout its entire life cycle. Therefore, this could be a turning point for the hardware’s potential.

Gears of War: E-Day
Gears of War: E-Day runs incredibly well on the hardware.

In an interview with Digital Foundry, The Coalition’s technical director, Kate Rayner, revealed that the studio used the Xbox Series S SSD as temporary RAM to improve Gears of War: E-Day’s performance. The developer explained how data is stored in three places: the CPU cache, the RAM, and the SSD, which is much slower than the other two.

The team behind Gears of War: E-Day used the internal SSD as makeshift RAM in order to store the city seen in the game. With the SSD being much slower than RAM, developers stored only those sections of memory that wouldn’t slow down the title when loaded in.

According to Rayner, around one more GB of system memory can be attained by utilising several GBs on the SSD. The Coalition did this to run Gears of War: E-Day at 60 FPS without lowering the quality of the overall product.

Xbox Series S
Due to problems with optimisation, some devs have harshly criticised the console.

Kate Rayner also stated that other studios are already inquiring about the technique behind this loophole. Hence, the inconsistent performance of Xbox Series S ports might be improved thanks to the work done on Gears of War: E-Day.

Do you think Gears of War: E-Day is the best-performing Xbox exclusive on the Series S? Is the console holding gaming back? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
