Xbox’s recent moves have led to layoffs and a more streamlined first-party umbrella under Asha Sharma’s leadership.

However, this restructuring has also led to thousands of job losses, leading to many criticisms of Asha Sharma’s approach. In particular, a former Microsoft and Xbox veteran has spoken out against the current CEO.

Why it matters: The current approach is quite cutthroat, especially for teams that had long been established before the new Xbox CEO’s takeover.

Former Microsoft executive Shannon Loftis recently took issue with how Xbox is being handled under Asha Sharma. 

For context, Loftis became part of Microsoft all the way back in 1993 and briefly served as the World’s Edge studio head. In a recent LinkedIn post, she mentioned that Xbox’s recent moves do not necessarily constitute the “clarity” that CEO Asha Sharma has previously talked about.

Shannon Loftis was particularly upset about the treatment of World’s Edge, the team behind various Age of Empires titles. However, this was far from everything she had to say.

In a now-deleted post via Twitter, the former Microsoft executive pointed out the irony of the Xbox CEO saying “clarity is kindness” beyond laying off multiple developers. She also mocked Asha Sharma’s collaboration with Kojima amid ongoing job cuts.

Please Asha, publish more “cool” photos from your Japan Kojima-maxxing trips. That’s the kind of leadership game development needed.

Of course, layoffs have almost become a tradition for Xbox, persisting long before the current CEO’s takeover. It will be interesting to see, then, if the situation improves under her tenure.
