Like the gaming giant Sega, the Sonic franchise has seen its fair share of ups and downs, but the IP has remained iconic in the games industry for multiple decades since its inception.

Sonic has also seen a bit of a comeback over the last few years, but Sega almost gave up on the series before this happened. According to the Sonic Team head, the gaming giant almost cancelled the franchise entirely.

Why it matters: Despite its poorly received games, the franchise still has the likes of Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Generations to its name, titles that many continue to look back fondly on.

In a recent interview, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka said Sega was ready to cancel Sonic before the first film’s success changed the conversation.

As per Takashi Iizuka, Sonic would not have existed today had he not fought for the series. This is exactly why the first film was such a huge deal, since it practically changed the fate of the IP for good.

In a past interview, the Sonic Team head also noted that the series was already on thin ice during the last decade. This is why games like Sonic Frontiers, in addition to the recent films, have been so important.

The biggest milestone for me was the first movie….that WAS a great hit and definitely changed the course of this franchise.

The good news is that Sega will likely continue to support Sonic for the foreseeable future. With recent well-received titles like Sonic X Shadow Generations and the third Sonic movie doing quite well, the gaming giant is going all in on its biggest IP.
