PlayStation To Retain 90% Of Its Disc Manufacturing Capacity In 2028

Physical Disc Manufacturing Capacity Will Not Disappear Immediately!

Story Highlight
  • Sony is expected to retain around 90% of its disc manufacturing capacity in 2028.
  • The update confirms PS5 game discs will still be produced beyond the previously announced cut-off.
  • PlayStation could, however, quickly cut down manufacturing capacity in the years to follow after 2028.

PlayStation is killing off physical disc production in 2028, and fans are not happy about this decision.

The gaming giant will no longer make discs for new games starting in 2028, but reports suggest that it will retain 90% of its manufacturing capacity in order to support discs for existing games.

Why it matters: The clarification indicates that Sony’s shift away physical games will be gradual as opposed to immediate like many had thought.

PS5 Physical Games
PlayStation would lose 15% of revenue on every copy GTA 6 sold if it shipped with a physical disc.

Sony is set to keep a major chunk of its PlayStation disc production capacity even after 2028. According to Game, the company’s factory will still have 90% PS5 disc manufacturing capacity after the physical media deadline in 2028.

Previous reports suggested this figure would go down to 10% following the end of physical disc production, but Sony DADC (Digital Audio Disc Corporation) has clarified that the 10% figure is attributed to the decline and not the final result.

As such, Sony will still have enough capacity to support discs for older titles. Whether this will still hold in 2029 and beyond remains to be seen, but physical games won’t immediately disappear in 2028.

PlayStation Physical Disc
Games In 2028 Will Not Receive Discs Any Longer

Of course, as mentioned earlier, this information pertains to older titles, since PlayStation has noted that games released in 2028 will no longer receive physical editions.
