Windows 11 Update Suggests Users Will Soon Control How Memory Is Split Between Applications

Nvidia's Upcoming RTX Spark PCs Could Greatly Benefit From This!

Story Highlight
  • Microsoft is reportedly testing a hidden feature that will let users control how memory is split across applications.
  • It is meant for PCs like Nvidia’s RTX Spark and mini PCs that share a single pool of memory across CPU, GPU, and NPUs.
  • This flexible option will let users drastically improve gaming and local AI model performance on the go.

The significance of memory has become increasingly clear as RAM modules continue to get scarcer and more costly every week. Therefore, using every bit of PC memory as efficiently as possible across applications has become more important than ever before.

A new report reveals that Microsoft is now reportedly testing a hidden feature called ‘IntelligentCarveout,’ which will let users directly choose how unified memory is split between graphics, AI workloads, and general applications.

This feature is meant for systems with unified memory architecture, like Nvidia’s upcoming Spark and mini PCs that use the same memory pool across CPU, GPU, and AI accelerators—instead of PCs with dedicated VRAM, for example.

Why it matters: This Windows 11 feature would give users a level of precise control across PCs with unified memory that even macOS doesn’t offer. It will let users prioritize whatever workload matters most to them, like gaming and AI endeavors.

Windows Latest reports that Microsoft will soon let Windows 11 users change how much unified memory is set aside for graphics and AI workloads, instead of letting the system dynamically split memory for you.

It will basically let you free up more RAM for applications you actually want to use or reserve more memory for local AI workloads, so both gamers and AI aficionados on systems with unified memory would benefit greatly from the feature.

The feature is expected to appear under Settings > System > Advanced, likely as a slider or preset profiles. It is a part of Microsoft’s broader initiative to improve Windows 11 optimization across various PCs. It will give more predictable and precise controls to users, even compared to macOS systems.

Microsoft is finally working to improve Windows 11 as it faces significant competition.

We could see the new feature implemented in upcoming RTX Spark laptops and mini PCs from various companies like Microsoft, Lenovo, ASUS, and the like. The optimization resulting from this feature would be an absolute game changer for gaming laptops.
