- Naughty Dog is said to have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on The Last of Us Multiplayer.
- It is said that this project was a huge undertaking, with all of the team working on it.
- This could put extra pressure on the developer with the upcoming release of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Multiplayer was cancelled in 2023 after many years of development, and it appears the studio has yet to fully move on from the fallout of this cancellation.
Reports suggest the team has made little progress on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet as a result of dedicating most of its resources to the live-service The Last of Us project. Moreover, it is said that the team spent millions of dollars on the game.
Why it matters: The game was greenlit at a time when PlayStation went all in on live-service projects, dedicating as many resources as possible to games based on the genre.
As per Jason Schreier’s latest video, Naughty Dog had already spent a huge chunk of money on The Last of Us Multiplayer before it was canned. Although the insider did not provide an exact figure, he noted that the game had cost upwards of $100 million by that point.
This is interesting when considering the fact that this means the cancelled title cost half or more than what the team needed to ship The Last of Us Part 2.
Naughty Dog spent a great deal of money, hundreds of millions, working on the project.
The big reason why costs quickly got out of hand is because the entire team was working on The Last of Us Multiplayer between 2020 and 2023. As per the insider, it was treated as a major project instead of a multiplayer spin-off based on the series.
He also explained that the decision to cancel it was made partly due to Naughty Dog fearing long-term support for the multiplayer title. Had The Last of Us Multiplayer succeeded, the developer could have become a one game team for the foreseeable future future.

Moreover, because PlayStation wasted such a huge chunk of money, Naughty Dog may feel pressured to deliver a big blockbuster with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Should the game underperform, PlayStation could take drastic measures, and the team has already had its fair share of layoffs since The Last of Us Multiplayer’s cancellation.
