Activision recently ported the first two Black Ops games to PS4 and PS5, instantly selling millions of copies.
Fans were delighted to see classic Call of Duty coming back, and many immediately dubbed the older titles better than the series’ modern releases. According to an analysis, these games have already made nearly half a billion dollars.
Why it matters: The success of these Black Ops ports could lead to a similar re-release for the classic Modern Warfare games, which many would argue are just as good.
According to an estimate from Alinea Analytics’ Rhys Elliot, the two Black Ops ports have sold over 11 million units combined. Black Ops 2 accounts for the majority of these sales, with Black Ops 1 selling 3 million units.
It is said that over 90% of the copies were sold on PS5 for both titles. Moreover, even with most people buying the games at a 50% discount due to PS Plus ($20 after 50% discount), the games have easily made close to $500 million.
Because Xbox owns Call of Duty itself, the analysts estimate that Microsoft has made over $400 million from this release. This means that for Xbox, the Black Ops ports were just as big a release as the well-reviewed Forza Horizon 6 from earlier this year.
PlayStation is also said to have made around $100 million from the Black Ops ports in third-party revenue cuts. All of these figures come from two games that effectively had no marketing and likely required a very small budget, since they were direct ports of their Xbox 360 and PS3 counterparts.
Of course, Black Ops 2’s more recent hacking problems may thwart the game’s momentum moving forward. The good news is that Activision appears to be supporting the game with updates for now, and perhaps it will continue to do so with how successful the two ports have been.
