- A multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 can now run 4v4 matches.
- The mod aims to recreate Naughty Dog’s ambitious multiplayer mode for the title, taking inspiration from the first game’s multiplayer component.
- Naughty Dog was previously working on a standalone multiplayer game for the series, but the project was cancelled a few years ago.
Naughty Dog’s latest title, The Last of Us Part 2, was set to receive its own standalone multiplayer project. However, Naughty Dog cancelled the project and is now focused entirely on Intergalactic.
This cancellation left fans disappointed, and some decided to take matters into their own hands by modding multiplayer gameplay into the title.
Why it matters: Modding is one reason many flock to PC gaming, and this is one of the more ambitious mods on the platform.
As of the latest update, this fan-made multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 has reached a notable milestone, with 4v4 matches now playable.
As part of this milestone, the modder has shared a lengthy video showcasing gameplay from the ongoing playtest. Moreover, features, such as the voice system from the original The Last of Us have been added to the mod.
Looking at the gameplay, many have praised the footage. Fans have also agreed that Naughty Dog’s decision to forego multiplayer for The Last of Us Part 2 was a huge missed opportunity.

Many fans still believe The Last of Us Part 2’s animation quality and game feel remain in a class of their own. They argue that this gameplay would’ve translated over in an incredible manner to a multiplayer environment.
This is exactly why this mod has proven to be so exciting for die-hard series fans, especially since The Last of Us had a sizable multiplayer community built around it on the PS3 and PS4.
