- Bungie continues to struggle as Marathon Game Director Joseph Ziegler announces his exit from the team.
- The extraction shooter is now being handed over to game designer Del Chafe III.
- This change comes just four months after the title’s release and dwindling population.
Bungie’s latest release, Marathon, has not lived up to the studio’s portfolio. In fact, the studio itself has faced numerous setbacks lately, with the end of Destiny 2 support serving as yet another disappointment for fans of the studio.
With Bungie now doing its utmost to turn attention towards Marathon and revive the extraction shooter, the team could be facing yet another setback due to the game’s director officially announcing his departure from the studio.
Why it matters: Bungie’s management and developer struggles over the last few years are no secret, and this departure continues the trend of important talent leaving the studio.

Taking to Twitter/X, Joseph Ziegler, the Marathon Game Director, announced that he will no longer be part of Bungie starting from tomorrow.
His long post confirms that this role will be handed over to Del Chafe III, who worked as a Game Designer on the title. Assisting Del Chafe III, Julia Nardin will continue to play an important role in steering the game for the foreseeable future as the Creative Director.
Joseph Ziegler himself is set to move on to new projects. He joined the team in 2022, marking four full years of development during the most important part of Marathon’s production cycle.
Ziegler states that he is leaving the game in capable hands, and the team has plenty of exciting content planned for the future.
This mission will continue in new and surprising ways so stay tuned for what this team has in store for you.

It’s no secret that Marathon’s release hasn’t been the comeback story Bungie had been hoping for.
On the contrary, the game has rapidly lost players and drifted away from mainstream attention since launch. The fact that the Game Director is leaving the studio so soon after the extraction shooter’s launch has only added further to the concern surrounding this title.
However, it’s also possible that a fresh set of developers leading the game will lead to a more interesting direction for Marathon. Perhaps the game will pivot further from its PVP-focused extraction shooter gameplay as it works to cater to a broader audience.
