The AAA gaming industry is booming worldwide right now, with studios from around the globe creating culturally relevant video games every year. Developers in South Korea and China are proof of game development becoming universal, with both countries coming out with major hits like Stellar Blade, Black Myth Wukong, and Phantom Blade Zero.
Industry veterans have even stated that studios in these regions are much faster at developing games than Western ones, highlighting their skill. Now, India is also joining the party, starting off with an action RPG that has some big-name collaborators.
Why it matters: With the global South hiring the best talent, there is some hope that every country in the region can start producing games that go head-to-head with Western products.
Varun Mayya, founder of Aeos Games, revealed that developers from Ghost of Tsushima are helping him with Unleash the Avatar, the first AAA soulslike from India. The studio boss stated that the development team has become experts at animation because they hired a specialist who worked on the Sucker Punch title.
Sujay is ex-Ghost of Tsushima; he’s contributed to the game, and he knows how to make characters really good.
The physical body movement and characters in Unleash the Avatar have also vastly improved because of the former Ghost of Tsushima developer. However, Mayya disclosed that there is a lot that Aeos Games still hasn’t figured out, including VFX, which the studio only started experimenting with last year.
Regardless, the project lead gave positive development updates on Unleash the Avatar, saying that photogrammetry was utilised to scan the entire city of Chanderi in merely nine days. Moreover, the team is still tweaking multiple aspects of the game, like combat and camera movement, as they want the systems perfected.

Considering how Unleash the Avatar is still in early development, it will be some time before a release date is announced. However, with a specialist from Ghost of Tsushima involved, India could have a breakout hit on its hands.
