In particular, veteran developer Hideo Kojima has spoken out against the death of physical media. The developer also says that he is currently stacking his Blu-Ray collection as a result of this announcement.

Why it matters: Many enthusiasts still enjoy growing their physical media collection, whether it be for games or movies. Hideo Kojima is no different in this regard.

The Developer Is Not Too Happy With Sony’s Announcement

Speaking at the II Cinema Plaza in Italy, Hideo Kojima discussed PlayStation’s recent announcement and its implications for the future.

As shared by Genki, the industry veteran noted that the situation is indeed quite sad, and he is currently buying a number of Blu-Ray discs, including both games and movies.

Since production is ending in 2028, this is about video games, but I grew up with physical media, so I find it really sad. Currently, I’ve been buying up a lot of Blu-rays, such as various movies, and CDs too.

Hideo Kojima also warned about the dangers of streaming and even worse conditions for game ownership in the future. He highlighted how digital purchases allow for downloads directly on to local storage, but this would not be the case if games streaming took over.

Ultimately, the developer fears a future where streaming becomes the norm, arguing that it would impact both movies and games.
