Finally, the Apple MacBook Pro Will be Getting a Touchscreen

Expert Verified By

It's only 10 years too late, but don’t worry, Apple was perfecting it all along.

Story Highlight

  • Apple is “100%” bringing the touchscreen to the MacBook Pro, per a new leak.
  • The touchscreen will only be limited to the top-end OLED MacBook Pro model.
  • Apple’s recent software changes also indicate a touch-friendly approach.

For years, Apple’s MacBook laptops have been criticised for lacking a touchscreen. Despite being extremely popular among both casuals and enthusiasts, the MacBook was always thought to be behind the competition in this one particular aspect. Mainstream Windows laptops have had touchscreens since the launch of Windows 8 in 2012, and Apple fans have patiently waited for Apple to bring this feature to the MacBook ever since.

Well, finally, it looks like the wait is over. According to prominent leaker Instant Digital on Weibo, the MacBook is 100% getting a touchscreen. This particular leaker has a distinct track record on Apple supply chain news and is considered credible in this space. MacRumors has since corroborated the leak and confirms the previous reports of industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo on X.

Apple has quietly been preparing the MacBook for touchscreen implementation. Apple recently unveiled macOS 27 Golden Gate at WWDC, and it includes several features that suggest a touch-friendly experience. For example, the Sidecar feature lets you use an iPad as a secondary display, allowing for an indirect touch interface.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has previously reported that an OLED MacBook Pro will be the first touchscreen Mac. This particular device was originally slated for a 2025 release, but it later slipped to late 2026. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo corroborated this information on X, who said that the OLED MacBook Pro will enter mass production by late 2026 and will indeed incorporate on-cell touch technology. As of right now, no other MacBook model is rumored to have touchscreen support.

This next-gen OLED MacBook Pro is also rumored to get Apple’s latest Silicon with the M6 Pro and M6 MAX SoCs. Reports of a Dynamic Island are also floating around. Some rumors also suggest that Apple may separate this MacBook Pro from the rest of the lineup entirely and give it a new name, which is something Apple loves to do.

Apple has long been seen as the company that is often late to a feature, but when it does bring it, it’s usually top-notch. Steve Jobs was famously against touchscreen displays on laptops and Macs, as he thought they were awkward to use. However, Apple’s new CEO, John Ternus, seems to disagree on that approach. While there is no official confirmation from Apple yet, we are most likely getting a touchscreen MacBook Pro by the end of the year.
