Ever since the official announcement of Witcher 3’s new expansion, the hype around the upcoming trilogy has increased even more. Titled Songs of the Past, this DLC will bridge the gap between the RPG and its highly anticipated sequel.
With CD Projekt Red confirming that the new expansion will be as big as Blood and Wine in scope, players are certainly in for a treat. However, this could be the last time Witcher fans get additional content, as the next trilogy won’t get the DLC treatment.
Why it matters: Expansions have become a meaningful way to expand the mythos of The Witcher, so if CD Projekt Red isn’t developing them for the next trilogy, the narrative needs to be air-tight.
In a Q&A session regarding its Q1 financial results, CD Projekt Red stated that developing expansions for the new Witcher trilogy might turn out to be difficult. The company explained that it plans to release the entire saga in just 6 years, and because of this ambitious launch window, adding DLCs will be very troublesome.
The plans are pretty ambitious. Specifically, to release three Witcher games within a six-year period. It would be very difficult to be very honest, for us to add an expansion to the upcoming trilogy.
Even though the reason is logical, expansions have become an essential part of Witcher folklore, with the likes of Blood and Wine garnering universal acclaim.
The upcoming Songs of the Past DLC is also expected to be a big success for CD Projekt Red, with analysts predicting it will sell 11 million copies and give a big boost to The Witcher 3.
The Witcher 4 and the upcoming trilogy have a lot going for them, of course, as CD Projekt Red has promised the most immersive world in the franchise yet, with cutting-edge technology being used to develop the titles. However, the lack of expansions may leave the fans with something to desire.
