- Subnautica 2’s early access launch has surpassed everyone’s expectations with multiple milestones.
- The sequel sold over a million copies in a few hours. It has already surpassed 467K daily peak players on Steam.
- It is the top seller on Steam’s global chart at the moment, surpassing even Forza Horizon 6.
The dreadful series of pre-launch controversies suggested that Subnautica 2 might have a hard time after launch, but that does not appear to be the case at all. Its stellar early start suggests that the sequel certainly won’t struggle in surpassing the franchise’s legacy.
Unknown Worlds Entertainment announced that Subnautica 2 has already sold over a million copies within hours after the early access launch, shattering any doubts and concerns in the process.
Why it matters: Subnautica 2’s current trajectory suggests that it might reach even greater heights, but that’s not to say that there are no complaints. Some players are unhappy about the lack of content in the early access release.
The incredible sales milestone suggests that gamers are already hailing Subnautica 2 as 2026’s new breakout darling.
According to SteamDB, the early access launch boasted over a huge 467,000 daily active players, and the numbers are expected to climb even higher during the weekend.
For those not in the know, Subnautica 2 was the most wishlisted game for several consecutive months on Steam. Most of those wishlists have now translated to actual sales, pushing the game to the top of the global Steam top sellers charts.
The sequel has even surpassed the highly anticipated Forza Horizon 6, which was dubbed the best-rated game of this year by critics.

The player reception on Steam is also ‘Very Positive’ at the time of writing. The game’s performance holds up well, and the gameplay also satisfies veterans and new fans of the franchise despite still being a little raw.
In short, Subnautica 2 is the perfect evolution of the first two games with room for improvement.
