Amazon Has Canceled The Lord of The Things MMO But Still Working on A New Title Based on The IP

LOTR Projects From Warhorse And Crystal Dynamics Are Also in The Works!

Story Highlight
  • Amazon announced a Lord of the Rings MMO in 2023, which has now been canceled.
  • However, the studio has revealed it’s still looking to create a game set in the same IP.
  • Multiple other LOTR games are also in development by Warhorse and Crystal Dynamics.

Back in 2023, Amazon announced it would turn to The Lord of the Rings IP for its next title. The title was revealed to be an MMO game, and would be adapted from Tolkien’s original books, but there’s bad news for those anticipating the game.

It has now been revealed that The Lord of the Rings MMO has been canceled at Amazon. This comes months after Amazon Games faced a significant number of layoffs, with a large number of developers losing their jobs.

Why it matters: Turning the popular IP into a video game hasn’t been too pleasant over the years. The biggest recent instance is the Gollum game that massively flopped, and now the MMO, too, has been shelved.

Eurogamer reached out to Amazon Games’ head, Jeff Grattis, who has confirmed that The Lord of the Rings MMO is now cancelled. However, the studio is still working on a “gaming experience” based on the IP.

Grettis said that their creative team is continuing to explore a compelling new gaming experience that does justice to the world the writer, J.R.R. Tolkien, created, and is working with Middle-Earth for the title.

Sources have even revealed to Eurogamer that only those MMO developers are left at Amazon Games who are working on Lost Ark and New World. So, in a way, the studio is completely shifting focus away from the genre.

However, Lord of the Rings fans shouldn’t be disappointed, as there are reports of multiple titles in the universe still in development. These include projects from Kingdom Come studio, Warhorse, and Crystal Dynamics.
