Nintendo Switch 2 Lite And OLED Coming Up?

Story Highlight
  • Nintendo invested ¥177.8 billion in research and development following the launch of the Switch 2 this year.
  • This investment marked a 23.7% uplift in this segment, hinting at ongoing work on new console models.
  • A Nintendo Switch 2 Lite model seems likely, given that it would help the company deal with rising memory prices by offering a cheaper option to consumers.

Nintendo recently released its latest financial report and confirmed a price hike for the Switch 2. As part of its consolidated Fiscal Year financial results, the gaming giant also revealed an insight into its R&D expenses.

According to Nintendo, spending on research and development increased by nearly 25%, hinting at an upcoming hardware launch.

Why it matters: Many fans have already demanded an OLED model for the new Nintendo console, in addition to a portable-only Lite option.

Nintendo’s report highlights spending of ¥177.8 billion on research and development in Fiscal Year 2026 compared to  ¥143.7 billion in Fiscal Year 2025.

The sudden increase in research and development expenses could be linked to work on a new model of the Nintendo Switch 2. Previously, Nintendo released the Lite and OLED models for the original Switch, so the gaming giant could be eyeing similar revisions this time around.

In particular, the company might be interested in releasing the Nintendo Switch 2 Lite quicker than the last generation to combat the rising hardware prices due to memory shortages.

It’s worth noting that R&D expenses alone do not guarantee the existence of a new model. However, because Nintendo’s strategy worked so well last generation, fans can expect to see multiple models coming out similarly for the Nintendo Switch 2.

Elsewhere, Nintendo is heavily investing in enhancing its first-party output as it continues to experiment with the new hardware and everything it brings to the table.
