Bungie Reiterates It’s Committed To Marathon Despite Abysmal Player Count

The Title Recently Hit A Record Low Player Count!

Story Highlight
  • Marathon has been struggling to maintain a player base despite launching a month ago.
  • It has lost almost 80% of its players on Steam and is doing worse on Xbox.
  • However, Bungie has shown a strong commitment and says it wants to support it for years.

Bungie’s Marathon hasn’t had that great of a first month as the studio might’ve hoped for. It has managed to sell over 1 million copies, but for a high-budget AAA live service title, that seems meager in the grand scheme of things.

Marathon has lost almost 80% of its player base on Steam, and it fell below the top 100 games on Xbox. Despite this, Bungie is showing strong commitment and has once again shown its intent to support the game for a long time.

Why it matters: PlayStation was massively criticised for its live action push, and that hasn’t resulted in anything promising either. However, the Destiny studio isn’t giving up on its extraction shooter that easily.

Marathon
Marathon is here to stay despite the falling player base

Talking to GamesRadar, Marathon creative director Julia Nardin reiterated that Marathon isn’t going anywhere despite the falling player base. She said they already have the vision and roadmap planned for the next few years.

Nardin said they have a vision for the story, but it isn’t completely locked in since the final decision rests on what fans think is good. But this clearly suggests that Bungie has already planned for many years ahead for Marathon.

Marathon Losing Players
The game’s player base has been constantly falling

Notably, a bigger number of developers are working on Marathon right now, compared to Destiny 2 at Bungie, which shows the dedication. At its base, the shooter has a lot of potential, but the falling player base will be a worrying sign.
