Xbox CEO Suggests More Studio Purchases Are Coming Up

Xbox Isn't Done Buying Studios Just Yet!

Story Highlight
  • Xbox has plans to pursue more mergers and acquisitions where it sees fit.
  • The gaming giant hopes to use future mergers when organic growth feels too slow.
  • Future acquisitions are likely to be limited to smaller studios following large purchases like Activision Blizzard.

Xbox has outlined a new approach for future operations as it moves forward with plans to reevaluate practically every part of the business, including exclusivity.

As part of the new plan, CEO Asha Sharma recently sent out a message to the team. Dubbed “We are Xbox,” this message went over future goals and aspirations pertaining to hardware, services, and various other areas of the business. The message also teased future acquisitions for Xbox.

Why it matters: Xbox has been the leader when it comes to mergers and acquisitions, spending nearly $100 billion on buyouts like Activision Blizzard and ZeniMax Media.

Xbox Mergers and Acquisitions
Xbox Is Open To More Mergers and Acquisitions

In the services section of Asha Sharma’s message for the Xbox team, she outlined that mergers and acquisitions remain a viable strategy moving forward.

The plan is to use mergers to target growth in areas where organic progress feels too slow for the company. This is something that Xbox already did with Activision Blizzard since it hoped to breach the mobile market with King’s IPs.

Anyhow, Microsoft is unlikely to target publishers on the scale of Bethesda Softworks or Activision Blizzard moving forward. However, the statement suggests it remains open to smaller acquisitions.

Because the gaming giant hopes to strengthen its portfolio enough to produce Game of the Year-winning titles, it could target studios that best fit this goal.

Xbox Game Pass First-Party Games
20% of the Xbox gaming catalogue, in addition to First-Party titles, now have cloud streaming support.

With practically everything regarding Xbox in flux at the moment, there’s no telling how its strategies will pan out. What Asha Sharma’s latest message confirms is that the team is ultimately keeping its options open without ruling anything out.
