The Metro IP is once again in the news, with several insiders claiming that a new title in the franchise is set to be announced very soon. Exodus, the previous entry in the horror series, came out back in 2019, almost 8 years ago.
Hence, it’s high time for a new Metro game, and according to industry experts, this upcoming title will be called Metro 2039, placing it four years after Exodus in the timeline. Now, an earlier build of the upcoming horror game has leaked online, and players are sharing their thoughts on the gameplay.
Why it matters: Taking the horror series back to its roots doesn’t sound like a bad idea, but if 4A Games cancelled this version to try something new with the IP, fans will be a lot happier.

A playable build of the cancelled iteration of Metro 4 has leaked online, and fans are relieved that this version was canned in favor of the upcoming Metro 2039. As seen in the gameplay posted by Viscera on YouTube, this build took the franchise back to its roots, taking the player into claustrophobic tunnels and corridors.
Hunter is the protagonist in this iteration of the horror game, and he is looking for some bandits in Sevastopolskaya, according to the story description from the YouTuber.
Furthermore, this Metro 4 build doesn’t have a lot of polish, as it was an early variant that was cancelled in development. Despite the iconic style of the franchise’s earlier titles shining through in the 2022 build, fans are glad that 4A Games is making something else instead of rehashing the first game.
Comments under the YouTube video pointed out that the combat feels clunky, and from what the small gameplay showcase suggests, the title was set in 2033. Hence, if the rumors are true, the new Metro game that is going to be revealed soon will be something very different.
