Could Even Continue For A Whole Decade!

Story Highlight
  • Reports suggested that the memory shortage could be resolved by 2027 or 2028.
  • Phison’s CEO has warned that the situation is worse and it could extend beyond 2030.
  • He says it will lead to many consumer electronics companies going bankrupt this year.

If you were hoping that the memory situation would get better soon, there’s some really bad news. Previous reports suggested that the crisis would be over by 2028 when the supply meets the demand, but that seems unlikely now.

Phison CEO has warned that the demand for AI won’t be over any time soon, and estimates suggest that the DRAM and NAND shortage could extend beyond 2030, and even potentially for a decade, with no end in sight.

Why it matters: Regular consumers have had the biggest effect from these shortages as PC components now cost multiple times more than they used to, and this series of unfortunate events is expected to continue longer.

Memory Shortage
The DRAM and NAND shortage could extend well beyond 2030

In an interview, Phison CEO Pan Chien-Cheng revealed that the crisis could continue beyond 2030 and even more. Foundries are demanding 3 years of prepaid payment, with the seller’s market at an all-time high.

Internal estimates from foundries suggest shortages will persist until 2030, or even potentially for a decade with no end in sight.

As the demand continues to persist, the shortage will last. He even stated that due to this, many consumer electronics companies are expected to go bankrupt or completely shut down by this or the next year.

DRAM NAND price increase
Prices have already skyrocketed to never-before-seen highs

There have been reports that major manufacturers are expanding their production lines, but according to Chien-Cheng’s statement, even with the increased capacity, they are unlikely to meet the global demand.

Amid all this, Chinese manufacturers like CXMT are a ray of hope, considering their huge production capacities. But it’ll take them time to break into the mainstream market, which could even take years.
