PS5 Sales Fall Off In Japan Despite Launch of Cheaper New Model

The $330 PS5 Dropped By 6K Units In Its First Week.

Story Highlight
  • PlayStation 5 sales in Japan have cooled down once again despite the launch of the $330 region-locked edition.
  • The console saw sales drop 6K from last weekend, selling only 17.5K units in its first week of tracking.
  • Sony introduced this new version of the PS5 in Japan to regain control of its homeland.

Ever since the release of Switch 2 in Japan, the PS5 has struggled to gain a foothold in its home market. The console’s sales have slowly withered away, with even the Nintendo Switch from 2017 overtaking it at one point.

Sony tried to resurrect the console in Japan last month by introducing a cheaper, landlocked model. However, from one look at the latest charts, it doesn’t seem like this strategy is working out too well for Sony.

Why It Matters: A $330 PS5 edition dropping in its second week in Japan is as puzzling to us as it is troubling for Sony.

Sony’s $330 Digital PS5 is specific to Japan.

PlayStation 5 sales have dropped once again in Japan this week, despite Sony introducing the $330 version of the console just recently. According to the Famitsu charts, the Japan-exclusive PS5 sold just 17.5K units in its first whole week on the market, down 6K from its launch weekend.

The Nintendo Switch 2 reigned supreme once again, selling 97K units from 24th to 30th November, building a hefty lead over the PS5 once again. The fall off for the cheaper edition of the console is troubling, as it had a brilliant start in just 3 days of tracking last week, selling over 23K units.

The $120 price cut introduced by PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino was a massive hit among fans, with many joyfully posting on social media that they are finally able to bring the PS5 home thanks to this generous business decision.

Fans in Japan were overjoyed to finally bring the PS5 home thanks to the $330 edition.

But with even this cheap version of the PlayStation 5 failing to make a dent in Nintendo Switch 2’s sales and falling off immediately after release, Sony will have a decision to make, as the PS5’s profitability is already under threat, thanks to rising memory prices
