Job Listing Suggests Platinum’s Next Action Game Based On Unreal Engine 5

PlatinumGames May Be Following In Industry's Footsteps With UE5!

Story Highlight
  • A recent job listing we found hints that PlatinumGames is using Unreal Engine 5 for its next project.
  • The team has typically relied on its in-house technology for games like Bayonetta and Ninja Gaiden 4.
  • Because so many studios have made the jump to Unreal Engine 5, PlatinumGames could be doing the same.

PlatinumGames has received a lot of praise recently. In addition to releasing Ninja Gaiden 4, the studio has worked with publishers like Konami, signalling a resurgence within the studio at the cusp of the action-games genre’s revival.

The team is also hiring developers for its future projects now. In fact, Tech4Gamers has found a job listing for an Environment Artist that suggests PlatinumGames is making the switch to Unreal Engine 5 for its next project.

Why it matters: PlatinumGames typically uses its own in-house technology when working on titles. Therefore, this shift would be a huge departure from the norms.

In the “Necessary Skills and Experience” section of the job listing, PlatinumGames explicitly asks for experience with Unreal Engine 5. This requirement strongly suggests that the team will use this engine for the project.

Elsewhere, the job listing implies this project is aiming for “photorealistic graphics” since this is also one of the skills PlatinumGames is looking for in candidates.

Experience using Unreal Engine 5. Those with a strong interest in photorealistic graphics.

Both requirements are different from the team’s norms. The studio typically goes for more stylized visuals, as was the case with Ninja Gaiden 4. Moreover, as mentioned earlier, the team has relied on its own in-house engine for numerous years at this point.

Because so many studios, including the likes of CDPR, have recently made the switch to Unreal Engine 5, perhaps PlatinumGames is keen to give the engine a chance. The team is still not in the best position today, so the shift to this engine could signify an attempt at potential cost-cutting from the team.

Interestingly, PlatinumGames was recently involved in an Unreal Engine 5 project. The studio worked on a small section of the Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake, which used the same engine.

As such, there is a possibility that the developer is hiring for work on a similar collaboration involving the technology. However, it would not be shocking if the studio switched to Epic Games’ engine altogether.

What do you think of Platinum potentially using Unreal Engine 5? Let’s discuss in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.
