This year marks almost a decade since Windows 10 was first released to the public. It has since gone on to become one of the most loved versions of Microsoft’s PC software, but all good things must come to an end.
Microsoft announced that it’ll end Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, to a huge disappointment of users. Amidst all this, somehow Windows 7 has seen a considerable increase in market share while Windows 10 has dropped.
Why it matters: This is quite weird as to how users are suddenly switching from an outdated piece of software to an even more outdated one; however, considering Windows 11 isn’t universally liked, it makes some sense.
According to data from Statcounter, as of the end of September 2025, Windows 10 saw a drop of around 40% in market share, whereas Windows 7 saw an increase by 10%, its highest since Microsoft dropped its support.
This is an intriguing turn of events, as Windows 11 is already out, but users report all sorts of issues with Microsoft‘s latest offering, including bugs, laggy responses, and more. However, it works fine on newer hardware.
So, if many people are indeed switching to Windows 7, it is safe to assume that they are using older hardware. Most gamers have already switched to Windows 11, as it has overtaken Windows 10 based on the Steam hardware survey.
Nonetheless, for those who aren’t interested in Windows 11, you can enroll for Windows 10 extended support, which will push the software for at least a few more years. This is always a better idea than going back to an even older version.
