- Samsung is increasing the price of its DRAM and NAND Flash memory chips.
- The price hike is a result of high demand from AI and data centers, as well as supply issues.
- DRAM memory, used in mobile devices and laptops, will increase by 15% to 30%.
According to information from a Korean news outlet, News Daily, Samsung Electronics plans to increase the prices of DRAM and NAND Flash memory chips. This means that DRAM memory, the storage devices, and the devices that use these will also get a price hike.
Samsung played this move right after SanDisk increased its prices for NAND memory. As a result of rising demand from AI and data centres, as well as supply restrictions, the entire industry is changing. Given that SanDisk has now been joined by Samsung Electronics, one of the world’s largest memory chip producers, other businesses will likely follow this.
This means that hardware and gadgets that require this memory will become more expensive. Western Digital has also increased the price of HDDs.
Samsung Electronics will increase the prices based on the type of memory. The most affected memory is DRAM, which is use to make memory modules. This will result in a price increase of 15 to 30%. The most significant price rise will directly affect LPDDR4X, LPDDR5, and LPDDR5X memory.
This will have an impact on mobile devices, including smartphones, tablets, handheld consoles, laptops, and mini-PCs with soldered memory. However, it will have a reduced impact on DDR4 and DDR5 memory used in desktop PCs or servers.
Regarding storage, NAND Flash memory chips, used in SSDs and mobile devices, are expected to receive a price increase of between 5% and 10%. The price increase may last till the end of next year. Other memory industry companies will also announce a price increase following SanDisk and Samsung.
SanDisk raised the price of NAND Flash memory by 10% for both distribution and consumer products. The price hike was immediate, taking effect on September 5th. The cause remains the same: rising demand due to AI, data centres, and supply restrictions.
