Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has already been framed as a love letter to classic turn-based RPGs. This game has also won plenty of awards, including various GOTY title.
The industry did not shy away from expressing its love for the title in 2025, and Sandfall Interactive continues to now share more details about the title. Sandfall Interactive’s latest comments show that the team pulled from major anime works, including Attack on Titan.
Why it matters: The studio’s ability to understand and draw from a wide pool of media was one reason the game ended up being such a huge success and resonated with a large crowd.
In a recent interview, the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 director cited Attack on Titan as a major inspiration and praised the anime as “an absolute masterpiece.”
Sandfall Interactive looked at Attack on Titan while thinking about character identity in Expedition 33. Attack on Titan is known for its dramatic stakes and instantly readable military-style designs, something that led to the recognizable outfits of the game’s main cast.

Discussing the anime further, director Guillaume Broche noted that he is currently rewatching the series and is loving it yet again.
On the subject of Attack on Titan, a new game based on the series is also in the works. with Koei Tecmo shifting its focus away from AAA productions, the Attack on Titan project is one of the studio’s few big-budget productions at the moment.
Elsewhere, the director praised Bleach for its character designs and confirmed that the team also drew inspiration from this anime. He pointed to Bleach as an example of characters that can be recognized almost immediately.
