Koei Tecmo Shifts Away From AAA Games To Focus On Mid-Sized Games

Koei Tecmo Doesn't Want To Rely Too Much On Big IPs Like Nioh!

Story Highlight
  • Koei Tecmo has plans to launch 6 console and PC games before March 2027.
  • The company is also targeting 19 mid-range titles during the same window.
  • The strategy points to a stronger focus on lower-risk projects over major AAA bets.

Following multiple major Souls-likes, including Rise of the Ronin, Nioh 3, and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Koei Tecmo appears to be adjusting its strategy. Moving forward with a focus on self-publishing, Koei Tecmo is now shifting to a heavier focus on mid-sized games.

Why it matters: AAA titles have proven to be a huge financial burden for studios in the modern era. These projects also need to achieve millions of sales to be considered a success, so the shift toward mid-sized games appears quite interesting to most developers.

As stated in its latest financial briefing, the Japanese giant wants to release 6 console and PC games and 19 mid-range games before the end of March 2027. The company appears to desire a wider pipeline of projects that may be cheaper, faster, or less risky than blockbuster AAA development.

This is a notable shift in a market where AAA budgets have become harder to justify. Longer development timelines and rising costs have pushed many publishers to rethink how often they can afford massive productions.

As for how it will balance these franchises, Koei Tecmo will likely continue to leverage IPs from Team Ninja, Omega Force, and more. However, it may choose to play it safe with tried-and-true IPs like Nioh as opposed to working on new franchises like Rise of the Ronin.

Recently, Omega Force also announced Attack on Titan 3, pointing to this title as one major release.

On the other hand, Koei Tecmo referred to IPs like Nobunaga’s Ambition and Atelier as those suited to mid-sized titles.

What do you think about Koei Tecmo’s attempt to balance its mid-sized and AAA titles? Let’s discuss below.
