Strong Achievement Amid Ongoing Controversy!

Story Highlight
  • Borderlands 4 is facing backlash over poor performance and optimisation issues, especially on PC.
  • The Gearbox CEO stirred controversy by putting the blame on the players and suggesting they refund the game instead of addressing complaints.
  • Despite the drama, the game peaked at over 300,000 players on Steam over the weekend, though reviews remain mixed.

Borderlands 4 launched to negative reviews on Steam, which later shifted to mixed. While the reception has not been particularly positive, the game still attracted over 200,000 players at launch, a remarkable achievement.

Since then, Gearbox’s CEO has made several controversial statements, as fans continue to criticise the game for serious performance issues. Despite this, the game has managed to surpass 300,000 concurrent players on Steam.

Why it matters: Reaching this level of player engagement is no easy feat. It highlights how impressive Borderlands 4’s performance has been, even in the face of mixed reviews and technical problems.

As you can see in the image above, the game managed to surpass 300,000 concurrent players on Steam over the weekend, but the reviews remain mixed. Its all-time peak currently stands at 304,398, and at the time of writing, over 119,000 players are actively playing it.

The CEO has also made several controversial statements. He said that those playing the game on older hardware should refund the game, and when confronted about the poor optimisation, he told users to code their own engine.

This has sparked a lot of backlash from the community, but it doesn’t appear to have negatively affected the game’s popularity. Of course, if the CEO had been a bit more welcoming, we might have seen even more players. Still, this is already a remarkable achievement.

Borderlands 3
Borderlands 3 Couldn’t Surpass 100K Players at Steam Launch Over 5 Years Ago

For reference, Borderlands 3 didn’t even reach 100,000 concurrent players at launch, so Borderlands 4 surpassing 300,000 is more than triple that figure.

The developer had expected the game to sell 6 million copies at launch, but so far, it has not announced any official sales numbers.

What are your thoughts on the game’s new concurrent peak? How many copies do you think it has sold so far? Let us know in the comments section below, or join the official Tech4Gamers forums for discussion.
