Silent Hill f Producer Frustrated By Soulslike Comparisons, Says Label Is Misapplied Too Often

Says Similar Combat Has Always Existed In Silent Hill Games!

Story Highlight
  • Silent Hill f producer dismisses any soulslike comparison for the game, saying that the label is thrown around too often.
  • He further notes that similar combat mechanics have existed in older Silent Hill games.
  • The game will feature heavy combat, but it is not a soulslike title and remains rooted in horror.

Silent Hill f will be the first new mainline entry in the series in over a decade. As such, the new entry is poised to try something new, starting from its brand-new 1960s Japanese setting and a heavy focus on melee combat, ditching firearms altogether.

Via its early previews, fans have been drawing soulslike comparisons due to the tough combat. The game’s producer is aware of such comparisons and expressed his frustration over the label, calling it ‘disingenuous.’

Why it matters: The recent surge in popularity of the subgenre has led to a tendency to label any game as a soulslike game hastily. Hence, the producer’s frustration really seems reasonable here.

Silent Hill f Melee Combat
Some previewers spent nearly an hour in boss fights that involved parrying and dodging using a stamina mechanic.

Silent Hill f producer, Motoi Okamoto, set the record straight on the game’s combat in a new interview with IGN

Modern players will see like, oh there’s a stamina meter, there’s a dodge, and they’re like, ‘Okay, it’s a soulslike.’

Okamoto also said that similar combat mechanics have long existed in Silent Hill games. Silent Hill 3 and 4, for instance, had a charge and stamina meter. This was long ago, before souls games even existed.

Silent Hill f Has The Potential To Become The Best Game In The Series

He once again reiterated that Silent Hill is not a soulslike, dismissing any comparisons.

These things aren’t new and exclusive to soulslike games, — They’ve been a part of action horror games for a very, very long time

Previously, Silent Hill f developers also stated that the game is combat-heavy to suit modern audiences better since challenging action games have been gaining popularity amongst them.

Therefore, it makes sense why people were so quick to make soulslike comparisons. Still, there’s a fine line between typical action games and the soulslike subgenre.
