Faulty 2013 GPU Only Required A Hair Dryer To Fix All Problems

Sometimes All It Takes Is A Hair Dryer!

Story Highlight
  • A Redditor bought a GTX 780 for £10 to see if he could get it working.
  • He attempted to resolve the GPU issue by downloading various drivers and a custom BIOS.
  • He then blasted the GPU die with a hair dryer, which fixed all the problems.

Graphics card issues can be complicated to fix and, in many cases, could lead to the complete death. However, they can be relatively simple at times as well, just as a person on Reddit was able to fix a faulty GPU with a straightforward hack.

A Redditor picked up a GTX 780 for £10 as a fun gamble. It booted fine, but crashed the moment Nvidia drivers were installed on it. He tried multiple fixes, but later ended up putting the GPU die in front of a hair dryer, which worked.

Why it matters: The prolonged heat from the dryer could’ve melted the solder, allowing the card to return to normal. While this might not work in all cases, it can be a convenient fix in specific scenarios.

A person was able to fix their GTX 780 by blowing hot air through a hair dryer.

AlbatrossAlarmed485 took to Reddit to reveal how he fixed the faulty GTX 780. He first tried DDU, flashed custom BIOS, and more, but nothing worked. Then he saw videos of people fixing cracked BGA solder using hair dryers.

He then removed the heatsink, applied heat to the GPU die using a hair dryer for 20 minutes, let it cool, and then repasted it. This time, upon turning it on, it was able to install drivers and work fine, at least for now.

Sometimes, GPU fixes can be pretty challenging.

This might be a temporary fix, but it can at least get you through for a little while. Also, the GTX 780 isn’t the strongest card as it is over 12 years old, but for £10, it could be a great deal for someone who wants a display card.
