PS5 Shows No Signs of Slowing Down!

Story Highlight
  • The PS5 consoles have officially sold 80.3 million units worldwide since launch.
  • The current console generation is just 2.5 million units behind in sales compared to the PS4 sales in the same period since launch.
  • PlayStation’s software side has also been rising in sales despite the lack of first-party releases, all thanks to Xbox-published games.

Sony has been on a roll in this current generation, persisting to dominate the console market. The PS5 continues its predecessor’s momentum and has now officially surpassed the 80 million sales mark.

Just for reference, the PS5 is just 2.5 million units behind the PS4 at the same point in its lifecycle.

Why it matters: 80 million units for a console is a gigantic number that has been achieved in less than 5 years. Despite initial challenges like limited supply and rising inflation, the PS5 has established itself as another success for Sony.

Overall, the software side has shown an enormous boost despite the lack of first-party games by the gaming giant. Xbox published titles have been doing quite well on the PS5, contributing to the rise in software sales.

Almost 5 years into this generation, Sony is entirely focused on developing the next generation of PlayStation consoles. They’ve partnered with AMD for the development of PS6, and the first results will already be available quite soon, with a software update for the PS5 Pro, unveiling the console’s true capabilities.
