THQ Nordic is putting the spotlight on the highly awaited Gothic 1 Remake, saying its success is key before they move forward with any new Gothic games. In an exclusive interview with our team, THQ Nordic said they’re open to making new Gothic games, but only after the first game’s remake is finished.
Why it matters: Modern Gothic sequels might happen in the future, but right now the main goal is to make a remake that longtime fans will love and that will also bring in new players to the classic RPG.
During an interview with Tech4Gamers, THQ Nordic clarified its stance on the future of the Gothic franchise:
Well, never say never again. We’d certainly love to go there. That’s [Gothic 1 Remake] our complete focus at the moment. Only once that job is done will we look at where the Gothic franchise might go next.

Piranha Bytes, the studio behind the original Gothic, shut down in June 2024. Some of its old team members moved to Alkimia, helping carry on the game’s legacy. But right now, there’s no team actively working on new Gothic games, so making a sequel would mean putting together a new group after the remake is done.
THQ Nordic has also grown the Gothic brand in other ways. In January 2025, they launched a board game called Gothic: A Shadow’s Quest through Gamefound. It takes place in the Colony, before the main hero from the original game shows up.
Right now, Gothic 1 Remake is being developed by Alkimia Interactive. Development has been ongoing for years. In February 2025, the first behind-the-scenes video came out, showing how the team wants to stay true to the 2001 classic while making the world feel fresh and alive.
A second video in April went deeper into what’s changing and what’s staying the same. The team is adding new quests, fixing story gaps, and improving empty areas. They also talked about creating a more “living world”, where NPCs follow routines, react to things, and have hidden details that make the world feel active even when you’re not around.
Alkimia says this is more than just a visual remake. The team is improving the story flow, using motion capture, and adding better animation systems so characters move and respond more naturally.
Anyhow, the Gothic 1 remake is planned for PC and new-gen consoles, releasing early 2026. In the end, whether Gothic gets new modern sequels depends entirely on how well the Gothic 1 Remake does.
