Story Highlight
  • Gearbox boss says he isn’t the one who will decide the price of Borderlands 4.
  • He says if you’re a true fan, you’ll find a way to buy it irrespective of the price tag.
  • The trend of $80 games has picked up after Nintendo’s Mario Kart World.

The prospect of $80 games has become a heated topic of discussion in the gaming industry. While fans are essentially against it, it seems to be the way forward for most studios, especially since Nintendo announced Mario Kart World.

Now, the Borderlands director has stated that if you are a true fan of the game, you will still find a way to buy it, even if it is priced at $80, but he doesn’t know what Borderlands 4 will cost.

Why it matters: Polls have revealed that most fans are against $80 games; however, data suggests that fans often buy the more expensive Deluxe Editions of games, which could motivate publishers to raise prices.

Borderlands director says true fans will still buy a game priced at $80.

Replying to a post on X about Borderland 4’s potential $80 price tag, Gearbox Studios boss Randy Pitchford stated that deciding the price isn’t his call, but if you’re a true fan, you’ll find a way to buy it.

He said that in 1991, when he was young, Starflight for Saga Genesis was sold at $80 at a local store, but he found a way to make it happen. While he has claimed the price isn’t his decision, this seems like a subtle hint towards the inflated price.

He says deciding Borderlands 4’s price isn’t up to him.

Xbox also recently revealed that its games could cost $80 beginning this winter. This confirms that GTA 6 will be at least $80. Even a former employee stated that the Rockstar game deserves the price.
