"Welcome To The New Normal of Pricing!"

Story Highlight
  • Mario Kart World was announced for $80 yesterday.
  • Following the announcement, an analyst warned that the pricing could be normal in the industry.
  • He states that more publishers will soon start following the same trend.

While fans have been surprised by the recent information regarding the Switch 2, the console’s price is still a hot topic.

The industry has been surprised by the price of the console and the games coming with it. Nintendo announced Mario Kart World for $80 yesterday, and it could go up to $90 if you opt for a physical release.

Following the recent price hike, an analyst has stated that a $80 price tag could be the new normal in the industry.

Why it matters: While many thought that Rockstar Games would become the first publishers to increase the current price of the games with the release of GTA 6, Nintendo has surprised everyone.

Welcome to the new normal of pricing, US folks. But instead of a slow increase over time like we've seen in grocery over the past few years, we're going to start seeing things happen all at once.

Just soon after the price of Mario Kart World was unveiled, one popular industry analyst, Mat Piscatella, stated that the $80 price tag would become the new normal.

According to Mat, many publishers will follow this trend, increasing the price tag of their games, and unlike in recent years, we will see it happen all at once.

He further states that since Switch 2 will be available in limited quantities at launch, the console’s price won’t hurt its sales, as everyone will want to acquire it.

Further discussing Switch 2, Mat states that the real test will come in two years when the supply becomes more readily available.

Still, it remains to be seen how the price of Mario Kart World will impact the gaming industry. Since we aren’t much time away from GTA 6, which is still planned to be released later this year, the price increase is inevitable.

Nonetheless, do you think non-Nintendo publishers would also start increasing the price of their games? Let us know your thoughts in the comments, or join the Tech4Gamers forum.
