Life is Strange: Double Exposure Led To Huge Loss For Square Enix; Sequel Now Unlikely

Expert Verified By

Might Be The End of Life Is Strange Franchise!

Story Highlight
  • Life is Strange: Double Exposure has been dubbed a major failure.
  • Following this result, Square Enix is unlikely to continue the series with another title.
  • The previous game also teased a sequel, highlighting that the team did not anticipate such a failure.

Life is Strange remains one of Square Enix’s most popular Western IPs and has made its way to all kinds of platforms, reaching the Nintendo Switch in 2023.

Last year’s Life is Strange: Double Exposure also brought back original protagonist Max Caulfield for a brand new adventure. While many enjoyed the returning cast and new stories, Square Enix now says this entry largely failed to live up to expectations.

Why it matters: The Life is Strange franchise has been one of the most prevalent in the interactive story-telling genre of games, offering various iconic stories throughout its nearly decade-long existence.

Double Exposure’s New Cast Proved Unpopular Among Fans

As per Square Enix’s latest financial report, Life is Strange: Double Exposure was a “large loss” for the company. This loss was big enough that it offset the success of the Dragon Quest 3 remaster, which performed fairly well in the market.

The most interesting part of this result is that Life is Strange: Double Exposure had a lot of excitement behind it. While recent entries in the series were based on standalone stories, this particular title was more of a true sequel to the original game.

The game’s ending also teased another follow-up with Max Caulfield, but Square Enix’s harsh comments suggest that this sequel will never see the light of day. Perhaps this is for the better since many fans did not like the direction the franchise took with Life is Strange: Double Exposure.

The same Square Enix report provided a sales update for Final Fantasy 16, confirming that the RPG has sold less than a million units since launch week. All in all, Square Enix continues to struggle with its biggest IPs.
