From the earlier days of Fallout to modern hits like Baldur’s Gate 3, the RPG genre has certainly come a long way. However, not everyone likes how RPGs have evolved.

Some classic fans of the genre miss the more complicated paths and choices of older titles, and the co-creator of The Elder Scrolls is certainly one such fan. He believes the genre lacks a sense of freedom today.

Why it matters: The recent success of RPGs like Baldur’s Gate 3 shows a huge demand for titles that break away from the linearity of modern RPGs.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Success Shows There’s Huge Demand For More Freedom In The Genre

During a recent interview with Video Gamer, Elder Scrolls co-creator Ted Peterson discussed how RPGs have evolved over the years.

The developer is currently working on The Wayward Realms, the spiritual successor to The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall. He stated that the game would offer several ways of completing quests, each leading to a different ending.

Moreover, the developer stated that this element has been missing from recent RPGs, and he plans to challenge that with his latest title.

I don’t like how linear and small, small certainly for the game world and the sandbox I’m playing in, how linear the storyline is, how forced you are into it.

Ted Peterson further stated that he enjoys freedom and likes RPGs that give players choices and a vast world to roam around. This is why his next title aims to go in a completely different direction.

The likes of Baldur’s Gate 3 also stand out as exceptions, offering plenty of non-linear stories and narratives for players to explore. Perhaps this is the reason behind Larian’s unprecedented success in recent years.
