It is no surprise that Microsoft has been redefining the Xbox brand for a while now; for starters, it is claiming everything is an Xbox in its new ad campaign.

Now, new data reveals that the company became the top game publisher last month and ended 2024 with a bang. Over $465 million was spent on Microsoft games across all platforms.

Besides the multiplatform strategy, Xbox will also focus on its hardware moving forward.

As revealed by the popular data firm Ampere, Microsoft’s new strategy made it earn 64% of its consumer spending on PlayStation alone. Most of the spending was driven by Call of Duty, as you’d expect.

To put things into perspective on how successful of a publisher Microsoft has become, EA was nowhere close to the second spot. The third-party publisher only generated $366 million over the same period.

The data also highlights the growing influence of Chinese publishers in the gaming market, with Tencent and Netease ending up in the top 10 most successful publishers for the first time due to Path of Exile 2 and Marvel Rivals.

Insiders also believe that PlayStation will soon follow in Xbox’s footsteps and adopt a multiplatform strategy.

All in all, the reception to these findings has been mixed across the board. Many gamers argue that Microsoft will become a highly successful publisher amid third-party focus, while others are upset at this new direction the company is taking.
