The Best RPG of All Time?

Story Highlight
  • Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim was released 13 years ago and changed the whole RPG genre.
  • Many news games in the genre are often compared to this legendary title.
  • Due to it setting the standard for an RPG in the industry, Elder Scrolls 6 might not meet expectations.

The era of RPG games started way before in 1974 with the release of Dungeons and Dragons, also known as D&D. However, the genre is massive, and there have been many prominent releases to keep notice of.

The Elder Scrolls franchise has had a big role in introducing the genre to many gamers, with the fifth installment being the best one. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim changed the RPG genre when it was released 13 years ago, and its effects are still prominent.

Why it matters: Now, whenever an RPG is released, many subconsciously compare it with the legendary Skyrim, released in 2011, as it is considered the standard of the RPGs.

Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Is Hailed As The Best RPG of All Time

Bethesda did the unthinkable with the release of Skyrim, as no one could have imagined such a role-playing game could exist. Sure, The Witcher 3 won the hearts of many when it was released in 2015, but come on, can it really surpass Skyrim in legacy?

It would be fair to say that Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim has set the standard for modern RPGS, as many game developers are influenced by this masterpiece. The game has an over 90% positive rating on Steam and still has a 24-hour peak of 32k players, which is surprising for a game that is 13 years old.

It has sold over 60 million copies, and even developers agree that Skyrim made Open Worlds popular. Giving it the crown for being the best RPG would be fair enough, but that totally depends on how you perceive the genre.

Regarding the next entry in the franchise, early development began last year, but there is still a lot of time left for its release. Many fans are expecting it to be groundbreaking, mainly due to Skyrim, but it might not meet expectations.

Do you think Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim deserves to be called the best RPG of all time? What are your thoughts about the 13-year-old game? Let us know in the comments section below or join the discussion at the Tech4Gamers official forums
