Horizon Online Guerrilla’s Next Project As Sony Went All In On Live Service

But Nearly 90% Of PlayStation's Live Service Games Have Failed!

Story Highlight
  • Horizon Online is reportedly the next big release from Guerrilla Games.
  • The team is unlikely to release Horizon 3 anytime soon due to the focus on GAAS (games as a service).
  • PlayStation needs this online spin-off to be a major hit after recent failures like Concord.

Guerrilla Games has just announced its latest release. The not-so-exciting Horizon Zero Dawn remaster arrives in October, but the team is already working on more interesting games for the future.

Among these is Horizon Online, a live-service project built on the foundations of this IP’s core gameplay. A new report outlines that this is Guerrilla Games’ next major release.

Why it matters: PlayStation’s current live-service focus has not yielded results as great as the company had wanted. Therefore, it will be interesting to see how the biggest IPs make the switch to live service.

This information comes from the very reliable Jason Schrier, who states that Horizon Online is almost certainly set to be the team’s next big release.

He clarified that the sequel to Horizon Forbidden West is not coming next, which makes sense considering the timeline of PlayStation’s plans. The current live-service roadmap was established during Jim Ryan’s era ahead of the PS5’s release.

As such, Guerrilla Games has already spent multiple years on the project. On the other hand, Horizon 3 is currently in pre-production, and Jason Schreier estimates that it won’t be arriving for several more years.

Looking at recent AAA release schedules, it might not be far-fetched to expect Horizon 3 as a PS6 launch title a few years later.

Horizon Online is their next product, not the third single-player game.

Given the long gap between the next two releases, this online project has much riding on it.

The popular journalist also reiterated that PlayStation’s live-service push was no joke. For better or for worse, this focus is now manifesting into back-to-back releases that carry their own set of risks.

Horizon Forbidden West Is Nearly Three Years Old Already

Previous leaks have shown that Horizon Online will come with a very different art style. The game could be banking on the popularity of titles like Fortnite, using a similar aesthetic to appeal to a wider audience.

However, games like Concord ended up failing due to their reliance on outdated trends. Therefore, Guerrilla Games must ensure it does not follow suit too closely and adapts to the modern gaming industry.
