Contributing To A Total Of $1 Billion In Overall Revenue!

Story Highlight
  • According to a LinkedIn post, Diablo 4 generated a massive $150 Million in revenue through microtransactions.
  • The game was heavily criticized for overpriced cosmetics, which even exceeded the price of the base game.
  • It was also review-bombed for this reason but has still managed to record huge MTX sales.

Diablo 4 was a massive release for Xbox. The title quickly became the fastest-selling Blizzard game ever and made over $666 Million in revenue in less than a week. However, one big gripe everyone had with Diablo 4 was microtransactions.

Despite so much criticism, players have actively invested in microtransactions, which has taken the overall MTX revenue to over $150 Million.

Why it matters: Even before the release, players were already dreading the microtransactions. However, this new development again raises the issue that modern gamers are too accepting of microtransactions.

Diablo 4 made over $150 million in revenue just from the microtransactions

Diablo 4 was heavily review-bombed just for this reason right after launch. However, the thing fans were criticising this game for has become its biggest strength. Even with the mobile game Diablo Immortal, Blizzard earned a huge $24 Million in revenue.

Leading the monetization strategy of the store and roadmap planning which have driven over $150M MTX lifetime revenue

-Senior Product Manager

The news comes from the LinkedIn account of the Senior Product Manager for the game. They are leading the monetization strategy for the Diablo 4 cosmetic store which includes personalized bundles and other offers.

The microtransactions included in the game are so ridiculous that some bundles even cost more than the base game itself. Even that hasn’t stopped players from heavily investing in them, leading to a significant chunk of revenue from the cosmetic store.

In addition, the post mentions that the game has made a gargantuan $1 billion in revenue since its release. It is also the most profitable game in the entire franchise and has had a solid player base for over a year since its launch.

However, it is concerning to see how much investment has been made in microtransactions. In-game purchases that exceed the price of the game have also been criticized, and this doesn’t give a strong reason for them to be eliminated in the future.
