Nintendo Never Compromises On Game Design, Says Dev

"This is What it Takes to be Number One at Anything in the World."

Story Highlight
  • Nintendo has been known for making games a lot more fun to play than others.
  • That is mainly because it focuses more on the game design rather than the next-gen graphics.
  • Other developers chasing trends should learn a thing or two from the gaming giant.

Focusing on game design is arguably one of the most important parts of making a game. A game can have the best story or visuals but not having the other mechanics aligned with that can ruin the experience. There are many games that fall into this category.

However, Nintendo has mastered this particular aspect as this giant majority of the time makes enjoyable games. The gaming giant doesn’t compromise when it comes to game design, and that is why it has a pretty massive fandom.

Why it matters: A game can be a lot more fun without realistic graphics but with great game design.

A former designer at Nintendo Takaya Imamura who has had a pretty solid experience at Nintendo shares why this company dishes out great games. He has worked under Shigeru Miyamoto and he is really a legend in the gaming industry. That man is behind the most popular Nintendo series such as Zelda and Super Mario.

In an interview with Gamescom Imamura revealed how Miyamoto is able to create such games again and again.

Generally speaking, he’s a really kind, hard working person, “but when it comes to game design, he doesn’t accept compromise.

Imamura explained that he was really proud to work under this legend due to his approach to game design. He thinks the way this man approaches game design is the way to be number one at anything in the world. The Mario franchise is the most sold franchise in the history of gaming and it is for a reason.

Nintendo Focuses Way More On Gameplay Than Focusing On Next-Gen Graphics

Imamura’s words have weight as Nintendo really doesn’t compromise when it comes to game design. Games from this publisher really don’t have new-gen graphics but they still sell a lot; why? Because they are fun to play.

Other developers should learn from this approach as many are still chasing next-gen graphics and the open world. Not every game needs to be like that every game does need to have a compelling game design.
