The Xbox Series X began this generation with the promise of offering Microsoft’s most powerful hardware to date. However, this console has faced its fair share of ups and downs.
Whether it be a handicap due to the Xbox Series S or lack of third-party priority, Microsoft’s premium console has had a difficult time. However, it has also been praised by many developers, one of whom claims that it often outperforms gaming PCs.
Why it matters: PCs outperform consoles most of the time, but this instance highlights the value of consoles coming with a fixed set of hardware. Perhaps this is why Obsidian Entertainment found the console performance to be better.
Speaking to Windows Central, Art Director Matt Hansen discussed the decision to prioritize 30FPS gameplay for Avowed. While the team previously implied that it would skip 60FPS on consoles, the latest interview suggests this decision is still not final.
Speaking about the optimization process, Matt Hensen elaborated on the process of working on optimization for the Xbox Series S|X and PC platforms at the same time. He remarked that this process has led to surprising results.

The Art Director did not clarify what kind of PC he was referring to, so the statement is a bit vague. Still, it can be seen as a testament to the Xbox Series X’s capabilities as a gaming console.
While this console has been outshined by the PS5, it can certainly hold its own. Games like Alan Wake 2 also show what the Xbox Series X hardware is capable of when put to good use.
Elsewhere, the Art Director noted that Obsidian Entertainment is still figuring out optimization for the Xbox Series S. He pointed out that this budget console lacks the extra bells and whistles of its bigger brother.
Obsidian Entertainment’s struggle with the Xbox Series S is no surprise since similar comments have been made about this console in the past.
Nonetheless, the developer’s claim about the Xbox Series X is certainly an intriguing one. There is no doubt about the hardware’s capability, especially for the $500 budget, but it will be interesting to see if developers hold a similar opinion once the rumored PS5 Pro arrives.
