- Nvidia has drastically cut the supply of GeForce RTX 40 GPUs, with a potential 50% drop expected next month, affecting the RTX 4070 and 4060.
- The company faced delays due to GDDR6X memory quality issues, impacting GPU production. The issue is resolved, but it affected the overall output.
- The supply cut may be a strategy to manage inventory and prepare for the upcoming Blackwell series, especially as demand for the RTX 40 series declines.
Partner concerns about possible shortages have led Nvidia to drastically reduce the amount of GeForce RTX 40 GPUs available.
Supply chain insiders claim that because Nvidia has limited the production lines, there could be a market shortage of the GeForce RTX 40 family as early as next month, which might lead to a 50% drop in supply.
Why it matters: The GeForce RTX 4070 is often considered this generation’s best option for mid-range buyers. This makes the supply shortage quite concerning for new buyers.
Currently, the GeForce RTX 4070 and GeForce RTX 4060 series are thought to have been the most impacted. On the other hand, BoardChannels reports that Nvidia has experienced low GDDR6X supply from relevant memory suppliers.
The company also reportedly got a batch of GDDR6X with quality control issues in the past, leading to a supply chain bottleneck. According to the source, Nvidia has already resolved this issue, which implies that it won’t last long.
However, a small setback like that would likely have compromised the overall production.
Given the difficulties Nvidia and its partners had with previous Ampere stockpiles, a reduction in supply might have been implemented to prevent large inventory outflows, especially since the launch of the next-generation Blackwell series is right around the corner.
That being said, it is only natural to observe a cut to the supply of GeForce RTX 40 SKUs, considering that not only will the RTX 50 series replace the current lineup, but customer demand for the GeForce RTX 40 series has also declined.
