Apple's AAA Gaming Experiment Has Failed!

Story Highlight
  • Various AAA games have been ported to iPhone recently, including Resident Evil 4 and Death Stranding.
  • These games performed poorly, and a report confirms that Resident Evil 7 has faced a similar fate.
  • The game seems to have generated less than $28,000 for Capcom in its first two weeks.

Mobile gaming is already very popular, as the market generates the most revenue in the industry. Recently, we saw a wave of AAA games coming to mobile, promising a new revolution for the market.

Publishers like Capcom and Ubisoft were among the first to show interest, bringing games like Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Resident Evil 4 to the platform. However, a report confirmed that these titles failed to make a huge impact.

According to more updates, Capcom’s Resident Evil 7 has met a similar fate.

Why it matters: The statistics illustrate that there’s hardly any overlap between AAA and mobile gaming. Perhaps the mobile audience isn’t ready for AAA titles yet due to various reasons, including hardware limitations.

Death Stranding Is Currently Playable On Various Apple Devices

Capcom announced Resident Evil 7 for iOS on June 13. Although the demo was up for free, users had to pay $20 for the full version.

The full game arrived on July 2, and two weeks later, it has sold just 2000 copies on iOS. According to the latest report, Capcom made just $28,140 from this port. However, this figure does not include Apple’s 30% cut.

While the game has only been out for two weeks, the launch period is typically the most exciting for any new title. As such, it would be fair to dub Resident Evil 7 a failure on Apple’s iPhone 15 series.

Previously, the tech giant described its phones as the best gaming platform. Because the hardware cannot compete with dedicated home consoles and PCs, the user base seems to have been less enthusiastic about this approach.

Candy Crush Saga
Candy Crush Is One Of The Biggest Games On Mobile

On the other hand, dedicated mobile games like Candy Crush and Warzone Mobile continue to rake in millions of dollars. Therefore, the mobile market is clearly happy with certain types of games.

It remains to be seen how Apple will approach AAA gaming on iOS moving forward.

The iPhone 16 is coming soon, potentially delivering the same chip across all models. This could make it a great platform for another attempt at AAA releases, though Apple might not be too willing to try again after the recent results.
