Why Xbox’s Multiplatform Strategy Is A Double-Edged Sword

Expert Verified By

While Xbox believes it will have much to gain from going third-party, I can see a future where this strategy works in PlayStation and Nintendo's favor, diminishing the value of the Xbox brand.

Story Highlight
  • Xbox recently decided to go multiplatform. However, this might not be a good decision for the gaming giant.
  • This strategy could be a double-edged sword, as it is more beneficial to its rivals.
  • PlayStation would benefit the most from this strategy since it would have an advantage in the exclusivity and hardware departments.

Since Xbox announced its decision to go multiplatform, fans have had mixed thoughts. While fans have largely opposed this decision, Nintendo and PlayStation users have been excited.

Even if this strategy can benefit Xbox in many ways, it might actually be more advantageous for Nintendo and PlayStation, and we might potentially see a massive decrease in Xbox’s appeal.

People might prefer Nintendo and PlayStation over Xbox, as this strategy would allow them to kill two birds with one stone. In simpler terms, it would allow them to enjoy exclusives from two platforms on a single console.

Why it matters: Exclusivity plays a massive role in a console’s success; great exclusives attract more people to your console, while the lack thereof can have the opposite effect.

The PlayStation Advantage

I believe PlayStation will benefit the most from this multiplatform strategy, as the PS5 is powerful enough to handle Xbox exclusives well. In contrast, Nintendo hardware, while widely popular, lacks the necessary power.

Since PlayStation and Nintendo won’t be adopting a multiplatform approach, their exclusives will remain on their respective consoles. This exclusivity could drive consumers to switch to these platforms, as they would get to enjoy both their exclusives and Microsoft’s titles.

In turn, Xbox might see a decline in its player base, making owning the console a secondary choice rather than a priority among the many options on the market. It seems that Microsoft already knows this, as it reportedly doesn’t expect any hardware growth in the future.

While this tactic will certainly increase game sales, I don’t believe the benefits outweigh the potential damage to the platform as a whole.

Xbox clearly chose the worst possible timing to go multiplatform, as it has a plethora of amazing games coming soon, which, if marketed properly, could have attracted a wide audience to the platform.

However, since the gaming giant has decided to take this route, I hope it has a clear vision to move forward. Microsoft has shown a lot of interest in cloud gaming over the years, which now seems to be a main focus, though we’ll have to wait and see how things turn out from here.

Xbox has experienced many ups and downs throughout its journey, and it has learned a lot. The gaming giant likely has a solid reason for this decision, and I hope to see it ultimately work in Microsoft’s favor.

As a huge fan of the gaming giant’s consoles, I don’t want to see Xbox disappearing into obscurity. Therefore, I’m still hopeful about this new era that the company is headed toward.
