Update:
According to insider NateTheHate, Doom: The Dark Ages is set to arrive on the PS5, in addition to the Xbox Series S|X. He corroborates the other report, stating that an announcement is coming at the Xbox Games Showcase.
Original Story:
The Doom franchise was expected to go on a break after Doom Eternal, with id Software potentially revisiting Quake. However, recent teasers made it abundantly clear that the studio would take fans on another outing with the Doom Slayer.
According to the latest reports, the next game is inspired by medieval fantasy and is titled Doom: The Dark Ages.
Why it matters: This franchise has been a staple of first-person shooter gaming for over three decades, with each entry creating buzz all around the world.
The latest report comes from Insider Gaming. This report confirms that Xbox is set to showcase id Software’s next Doom project at June’s major showcase.
The report suggests that this game is titled Doom: The Dark Ages, with development lasting as long as four years. Not much else is known at the moment, but the source speculates that this story may give fans a glimpse at an earlier version of the Doom Slayer.
This was already done in Doom Eternal to some extent, with flashbacks highlighting an earlier version of this character. Anyhow, with id Software set to return after 2020, there is sure to be excitement among the fandom.
A medieval fantasy setting could also allow id Software to provide a more methodical gameplay feel to this franchise. The faster pace of 2020’s entry became a common critique among longtime fans, who felt the game was leaning too far into Quake’s DNA.
While nothing has been confirmed for now, multiple sources have corroborated the reports. At this point, all that’s left to do is wait for Xbox’s official announcement on June 9.
