50% of 118 Million PlayStation Users Sticking With PS4 Despite PS5 Launch

4 Years After PS5 Launched, 59 Million Still Using PS4!

Story Highlight
  • PS5 users make up only half of the total number of active users on the PlayStation Network.
  • It seems PlayStation users are more than happy with everything that the PS4 can still do.
  • Future releases like GTA 6 and Assassin’s Creed Shadows may finally encourage audiences to make the jump to PS5.

The PS5 has been on the market for four years, boasting sales of over 59 million units since its launch in 2020. Despite this impressive figure, it falls slightly short of the PS4’s sales within the same timeframe, which hit approximately 60 million.

Interestingly, these PS5 sales represent only half of PlayStation Network’s active user base.

Why it matters: This stat shows the PS4’s impressive longevity and solidifies its place as one of the best consoles of all time.

PlayStation 4 Console Anniversary UK
While the PS5’s user base is expected to grow over time, the PS4 currently remains a popular choice for gamers.

As of March 31, 2024, Sony says 118 million people are actively using PlayStation Network. That means about 59 million of them are sticking with last-generation consoles.

It usually takes a while for folks to switch to new consoles, especially since there weren’t enough PS5s at the start. In what Sony describes as the “latter stage” of the PS5’s life cycle, the division between PS4 and PS5 users is starkly clear.

Early adopters of new consoles often face a waiting period for developers to fully utilize the new hardware’s capabilities. Despite being nearly four years into the PS5’s lifecycle, it can be argued that this generation has not come into its own yet.

The prevalence of service games such as Fortnite means many PS4 users remain engaged with their existing systems, only upgrading when absolutely necessary. Additionally, some users may be waiting for the PS5 Pro, rumored to be released in Q4 2024.

The PS5 Pro is expected to be a more powerful version of the PS5 with improved graphics and performance.

PS5 Sony PlayStation 5
The gaming industry is gradually shifting away from supporting old-gen consoles.

A game like GTA 6 could also push gamers to upgrade to PS5 consoles, though this title is not coming before Fall 2025. Moreover, Ubisoft is ditching the PS4 for Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

This title marks the first entry in the series to skip last-generation consoles since the PS4’s debut in 2013. Ubisoft’s decision to leave behind older hardware shows a clear trend in the industry.

More recently, CD Projekt Red announced that Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty wouldn’t be released on the PS4. Subsequently, Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores skipped this console.

As such, it is clear that the PS4 is on its way out. However, the fact that millions continue to find it more than adequate speaks more about the current generation than the last. Perhaps Sony has failed to provide a compelling reason for gamers to upgrade.
