It would be an understatement to say that Helldivers 2 and PlayStation had a rocky weekend. Following the sudden introduction of mandatory PlayStation accounts, all hell broke loose in the fandom.
This announcement was followed by review bombs, refunds, and Arrowhead siding with the community. Two days later, it seems the community has come out on top, with PlayStation answering fan demands with a positive response.
Why it matters: This is an incredibly positive and vital development since PlayStation was on the verge of single-handedly running its most significant PC success.
PlayStation has just confirmed that its planned update for May 6 has been cancelled. This means that PC gamers on Steam can continue the fight for democracy without signing up for PlayStation.
Since Sony does not operate in more than 100 countries, the gaming giant has effectively opened up its most successful live-service release to millions through this simple announcement.
The gaming giant also confirms this will impact all players, including future buyers. In its tweet, PlayStation clarifies that it values player feedback as it learns to navigate the complex landscape of PC gaming.

Since Arrowhead has already confirmed that this requirement will be implemented in all future PlayStation live-service titles, the recent outrage may result in Sony doing away with the implementation altogether.
While some may be concerned that the damage has already been done, Helldivers 2 has maintained a surprisingly healthy player base on Steam despite the outrage. Perhaps the reviews will also recover following this announcement.
If nothing else, this will be a massive relief for Arrowhead. The studio has repeatedly shown its loyalty to the players, and we couldn’t help but feel bad for everyone stressing out over the weekend.
