Palworld Made Billions in Profit With Just $6.7 Million Budget

Devs Uninterested In Big Budget Games!

Story Highlight
  • Palworld has been the most successful release of the year.
  • It has been reported that the game was developed for under 1 billion yen, roughly around $6.7 million.
  • However, it made tens of billions of yen in return.

Increasing budgets are the biggest problem of the AAA industry today, yet various AA games show that big budgets are not needed for profitable releases.

In 2024, Palworld and Helldivers 2 go against the trend of requiring more and more money to create. According to Pocketpair, the former was created with just $7 million but made billions of yen in profits.

Why it matters: Palworld is now Steam’s second-biggest title by player count, leaving behind hundreds of AAA games that required much bigger budgets.

Palworld Has Pulled In Millions of Pokemon Fans

During a recent interview with Bloomberg, Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe shed light on the future direction of this team, including plans to be acquired.

He also revealed that the development cost of Palworld was under ¥1 billion, which is around $6.7 million. However, the game’s profits eclipsed this amount, making over 10x the budget.

While the CEO did not confirm whether this budget included marketing costs, it is significantly lower than the cost of a major release like Skull and Bones, which needed $120 million.

Despite this budget, Skull and Bones failed to capture players, while Palworld thrived for many months.

This instance further proves that the gaming industry might be better suited to AA gaming in the future. While AAA games will always have their place, not every release needs to cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

Had Palworld taken up a similar budget, its success would have been undermined due to the limited profitability. However, combining a limited budget with incredible success, Pocketpair has landed on one of 2024’s most profitable releases.

Palworld Is Still 2024’s Biggest Release

Palworld is the biggest third-party launch on Game Pass and has gathered over 19 million players in just a few months. We believe this success is exemplary for both smaller and bigger developers, serving as a ray of hope in the currently struggling industry.

Palworld is expected to earn even more profits for Pocketpair moving forward. With an ambitious live-service roadmap, the game will introduce various new features soon.

The team is also aiming to release the game on more platforms soon, likely opening it up to the PS5’s large user base.
