The Witcher 4 To Start Full Production In 2024 With 400 Devs

The Witcher 4 Excitement Is Growing!

Story Highlights
  • The Witcher 4 is one of the most anticipated releases in the gaming industry.
  • CD Projekt is aiming to enter the production phase with the game in 2024.
  • They are also looking forward to having 400 developers working on the game by the middle of this year.

CD Projekt RED has created two of the gaming industry’s best RPGs. The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 both excel in different parts of the genre, and the team is set to break RPG boundaries again with The Witcher 4.

Hot off the heels of a Cyberpunk 2077 resurgence and 50 million sales for The Witcher 3, the team is busy with Codename Polaris, the next mainline Witcher game. According to an interview from Reuters, The Witcher 4 will enter production in 2024.

Why it matters: The heightened anticipation for Witcher 4 stems from the incredible reception of the previous installments in the Witcher franchise, particularly Witcher 3, which set a new standard for open-world RPGs.

Witcher 4

Joint CEO Adam Badowski recently outlined CD Projekt RED’s plans for this major franchise. The Witcher 4 has been in pre-production for a while, with the studio laying the foundation for the project’s development.

However, considering this target, the team is likely well into pre-production and nearly ready to wrap up. Badowski stated:

“We’d like to have around 400 people working on the project by the middle of the year.”

Following the release of Cyberpunk’s Phantom Liberty expansion, approximately 25% of the team involved in the expansion shifted their focus to the development of Codename Polaris, with more than half of the studio reportedly working on the game.

The studio hopes to bolster these efforts further, improving the odds of smooth development for The Witcher 4. Entering production in 2024 could mean a launch at some point in 2026 or 2027 at the earliest.

However, with the disaster that was Cyberpunk 2077 at release, CD Projekt RED might take its time to polish the game.

Additionally, other projects like Orion, the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, continue to remain in the conceptual phase, splitting resources across both games. The team hopes to have around 80 developers involved in this sequel by the end of 2024.

The Witcher 4 should be quite exciting if the team can live up to its history of well-crafted RPG experiences. This game is still several years away, but CD Projekt RED’s efficient workforce is making steady progress to enter production soon, nearly ready to mark a major milestone for this RPG.
